Last year, volunteers with the Free Tax Prep (FTP) Coalition prepared over 7,800 tax returns, delivering $10 million in refunds back to Southwestern PA residents and saving them $2 million in tax prep fees.

Volunteers connecting low-income households to their full tax refunds make a huge difference in our community. With your help, we can continue to expand our impact.

Volunteer as either a Tax Preparer or as a Greeter assisting with intake. No professional experience is required. We will provide all of the training you need!

Volunteering is fun and rewarding, and many people return year after year, like Shareef (pictured above), who serves as a greeter. FTP volunteers enjoy collaborating as a team together and with staff to prepare accurate returns and ensure taxpayers get their full refund. Watch the video above to see a tax site in action and learn a little more about how you can make a difference.

Another long-time volunteer is Rick, who started volunteering after he retired. A friend of his had worked at one of our FTP Coalition sites and introduced him to the service. After training, Rick found that he actually loves doing taxes. “This is empowering. This is something that everyone else hates to do and for most of our clients is complicated.” It was obvious to him that the money he was helping people get back in their refund could truly change their lives.

So for the past 10 years, Rick has volunteered twice a week during tax season. “My life is better because I know I can do something that our clients are greatly benefitted by.”

Bilingual? Bienvenido!  More than 5% of our taxpayers speak a language other than English. Spanish, Burmese, Nepali, and Arabic are most common, but we see many others languages as well. Spanish-speaking volunteers are particularly needed at the Casa San Jose and Just Harvest South Side sites, and the SHIM Family Center site especially welcomes Burmese and Nepali speakers. Whichever site you choose, let us know your language capacity when you register and you may be able to use your language skills as well!

With 20 sites across 5 counties, you can choose a location and time convenient to you! We have tax sites open 6 days a week, with daytime, evening, and weekend schedules.

The FTP Coalition is a partnership of nonprofit, education, and government organizations operating Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites in Southwestern PA. The Coalition is sponsored by the United Way of Southwestern PA and managed by Just Harvest. VITA sites are hosted by nonprofits and universities throughout Southwest PA. Learn more about our partners on the About Us page.
