KHRYSTA’S STORY

From homeless to ‘welcome home’

By the time a friend told Khrysta about Project Journey she had been homeless for 4 months. “I developed lots of skills in the military,” she says, “I learned discipline, focus, and how to push myself beyond what I think I can do. But I never had to learn about basics like food, shelter, and money. So when I got home, I didn’t know where to start.” The Women Veterans Coordinator at the Veterans Leadership Program referred Khrysta to an array of services: credit counseling and financial literacy, help with finding and paying for an apartment, career counseling, job referrals, career attire, start-up business counseling, and a “Welcome Home” package of home essentials. I’m so happy that I don’t have to couch-surf anymore,” Khrysta smiles. Now she divides her time between her fitness counseling business, her service in the US Army Reserves, and the good job she just landed with a major local corporation.
