REBECCA’S STORY

Have wheels, will travel

“The truck I used to get back and forth to work needed emergency repairs, but I did not have the money to get the repairs done. I was so happy and relieved to learn United for Women could help me.”

After separating from her husband, Rebecca struggled to keep up with the cost of three children, transportation, rent and other basic needs. When, due to financial instability her three girls were put into foster care, she knew she had to make big changes to get on track and get them back.

Rebecca got a job with Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania and was earning a stable income. She applied to school, which is something she always wanted for herself. That’s when her car broke down and needed emergency repairs.

“It was really a struggle. That’s the car I was using to get back and forth from work and how I was able to still see my children,” Rebecca said.

A friend at Goodwill referred Rebecca to Family Services of Western Pennsylvania’s Ways to Work Extra-Mile Program, which helps women with a one-time grant for car repairs. This program is funded by United Way’s United for Women initiative.

“The program helped me out, got my car inspected, got the work done that it needed, and now I’ve been able to keep up with the vehicle,” Rebecca remarked.

Now, Rebecca is in a good place. She’s thriving at school – a full-time straight-A student at Bidwell Training Center and working to graduate from the Medical Coding program this summer. She is still working at Goodwill, and she has a great relationship with her kids. She is hoping to have them back in her care full-time once she graduates and finds full-time employment.

“The Ways to Work Extra-Mile Program helped me have a vehicle that is up and running, which allows me to get to and from work, go to school and see my kids,” Rebecca added. “People at school know me, I am always on time, and I am working hard. This car allows me to do that.”

Rebecca’s girls are 15, 13, and 11. She’s proud of their accomplishments. Thanks to United for Women, Rebecca will be able to continue building a relationship with her children and is on her way to a successful career.
