Open Your Heart and make a difference in the life of a local senior

There are seniors in our community struggling to remain in their cherished home, dreading going into a nursing home. I bet all of you know someone – perhaps even in your own family. Your mom, your aunt, or your grandparent? Can you feel their pain? If you could join thousands of others helping seniors maintain independence, would you?

Often fiercely independent, fearful, and not knowing where to turn, seniors silently hope someone will help. Burdened by physical or other functional limitations, they wonder: How will I get to my doctor’s appointment? Buy groceries? Prepare meals? How can I replace the companionship of lost loved ones?

Thankfully, our community is answering their call.

United Way of Southwestern PA’s Open Your Heart to a Senior program recruits volunteers to provide transportation, home-safety assessments, meals and companionship to vulnerable seniors. Conducted through the best community service agencies, last year across the region nearly 2,000 volunteers spent more than 68,000 hours forming helping relationships with more than 7,000 seniors, enriching our whole community. In addition to providing peace of mind to their family and friends, participating seniors report feeling safer and falling less.

Do you want to join this incredible effort and feel good about helping someone in need? Together, we can brighten the days and outlooks of our older neighbors.
