Volunteers Getting Dirty

Brittany Goncar believes that anything’s possible if enough people come together with a can-do attitude and a vision. As a member of the Next Generation Volunteer Committee, she makes that happen. She recently helped plan Plant It Forward, part of a Day of Action sponsored by fitUnited in which over 250 community volunteers pulled weeds, collected garbage, and restored the grounds of Fowler Park and Playground, a neglected Northside treasure.

About 50 registered Next Gen volunteers cleared paths and garden beds, prepped soil, painted benches, and planted donated flowers in the Peace Garden, aptly shaped like a giant peace symbol. “We were with our friends having fun and meeting the people who live in the neighborhood. We made connections. We had a tangible impact on the space and on people’s lives. That makes you want to do more.” To learn how you can become involved, visit our volunteer site.
