LEE HALLER
A monthly visit to a senior makes a big difference
“I volunteer because helping seniors remain in their own homes is really important.”
Lee Haller was looking for a way to get involved in his community, but with a full-time job and a busy family, he needed the right opportunity to fit his schedule. With a passion for helping local seniors, Lee was excited to hear about United Way’s Open Your Heart to a Senior (OYHS) program through Wesley Family Services.
“Just by giving a little bit of my time, I realized I could really make an impact on local seniors. I’ve made some great relationships,” Lee said.
Now, 10 years later, Lee delivers food to two women who live in the East End once a month, and he lends them a hand with other projects when needed. “They both really enjoy the company – I know they look forward to our visits. I’ve been able to see their grandchildren grow up because I’ve been with them so long,” Lee reflected.
Lee feels his volunteerism is setting a good example for his own children, who he occasionally brings with him to the food pantry, where he picks up the food on his way to visit the two women. “I try to show my children that volunteerism is something they should do. They come with me and see how we’re helping people,” Lee said. “The women love it when they come along.”
Through his OYHS volunteering, Lee is proud to help these women and make a difference in their lives. “They depend on me a little bit. They are in a position where they need the monthly food deliveries. It feels good to be able to be there for them.”
