Ms. Anna’s Story

A little help goes a long way

Ms. Anna was a 93-year-old North Hills resident who had been living independently in her apartment for 22 years. In recent years, she needed a little extra help. That’s when she signed up for United Way’s Open Your Heart to a Senior (OYHS) initiative.

After getting help from volunteers in the program for several months, Ms. Anna requested a weekly grocery shopper and was connected with OYHS volunteer, Brittny McGraw. Two years later, Brittny continued to visit Ms. Anna every week, as well as take her grocery shopping. Through their weekly trips to Giant Eagle, the two formed a love for one another and a strong friendship.

“I just love having her with me. I love her,” Ms. Anna said.

The two created a special bond—laughing with one another and even making jokes about their grocery trips. “She tries to keep me from getting stuff that isn’t on my list,” Ms. Anna said. “I’m putting stuff in the cart, and she’s following behind taking it out!” But Ms. Anna appreciated that Brittny kept her budget on track.

Mostly, Ms. Anna enjoyed the company and was so appreciative of Brittny’s help. Their visits meant so much to her, and she looked forward to them every week.

“This can be such a huge benefit for both people involved,” Ms. Anna said.

Ms. Anna passed away on August 26, 2017. As Brittny says in a Facebook post commemorating Ms. Anna, she will always cherish the time they got to spend together.
