Cherishing time with seniors and change makers

Kate Dawson owns her own insurance agency in Murrysville, PA. In addition to Bridges, she is a member of the Women’s Leadership Council.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

I am passionate about insurance because I know I’m doing something to protect people. Some people view insurance as a commodity or an expense, but I know it makes a difference in the world.  Insurance is involved in politics, the environment, and in every industry. I help people through life’s biggest milestones: purchasing a home, combining policies when they get married, insurance for their children’s first car. After ten years in the industry, I opened my own agency and it’s the best job I ever had.

What are some things you like to do outside of work?

I am an avid gardener and I love self-development. I practice yoga and mindfulness. I am very active in the community, and I volunteer with several organizations. My husband and I have an ever-growing collection of vinyl, so we’re always looking for vintage shops and shows.  I have always loved the theater, so you’ll find me in the Cultural District quite often or supporting small community theaters.

Where is your favorite place to travel?

I’ve visited almost all fifty states and have taken several trips abroad. My favorite destination was Paris.  It was everything I dreamed it would be and more. I visited almost every district of the city, but there is still so much more to explore.  I look forward to stamping my passport in France sometime soon.

What is the best advice you were ever given?

My best advice came from my dear friend Steve Dezember II.  Steve recently lost his battle with ALS, but over the span of our friendship, he taught me to change my outlook on life.  Steve was dealt an unimaginable prognosis, but he met each challenge with grace, strength, and a tenacity that left me in awe. Each day he focused on the positives in life and the good in people.

What is your favorite United Way memory?

I have participated in the Open Your Heart to a Senior program. I am building relationships with seniors who are lonely and need companionship. I send them cards and check in with them. It’s so important to show seniors that they have not been forgotten, that they’re not alone, and that there are younger people in the community who are here to support them. Without a doubt, this has been my most rewarding United Way experience.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned from your involvement with United Way?

From my involvement with Women’s Leadership Council to Bridges, I learned there are many people right here in my community, specifically young professionals, who are working towards a greater good. Through these collaborations, United Way is building communities that can problem solve and support the individuals who need a helping hand.
