How a Community Came Together to Support a Determined Student
In May 2023, a high school counselor in Westmoreland County reached out to the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) PA Working Women’s Closet on behalf of a senior student facing financial constraints. Recognizing the student’s determination to celebrate her graduation, the counselor proactively connected her with the YWCA, an organization dedicated to empowering women, to explore available resources and support.
The Working Women’s Closet program at the YWCA Thrift Shop was eager to assist. A coordinator reached out to the student to learn her size and style preferences but realized that a suitable dress was not in stock. Refusing to give up, the coordinator contacted a local store with whom the YWCA had a relationship. Thanks to this partnership, a discounted dress was found and purchased in the student’s size.
The student was incredibly excited when she found out a dress had been found for her. The joy multiplied when she came to try it on and discovered it fit perfectly. As she twirled in the dressing room, she was thrilled to know she could attend her high school graduation in style without feeling out of place. It warmed her heart to know that someone cared enough to make it possible.
On graduation day, the student walked across the stage confident in her beautiful new outfit. The YWCA coordinator, who assisted along the way, was invited to join in the celebration. She spoke of the profound joy in witnessing the student’s dedication and was proud to share the positive impact of the YWCA Working Women’s Closet on the community.
Through the efforts of the PA Working Women’s Closet, this young woman felt empowered, valued and ready to embrace her future. This experience not only gave her confidence on her graduation day but also inspired her to pursue further education. The YWCA is thrilled to celebrate her latest decision to train as a medical assistant, a journey sparked by the simple act of kindness that opened doors to new opportunities.
