Making a Difference Through Mentoring
Katie Wilson’s experience volunteering with United Way changed her entire world view. For the past two years, Katie has volunteered with United Way’s Be A Middle School Mentor program, and the experience has opened her eyes to the difference mentoring can have on the mentor, the mentee and the greater community. The program helps middle schoolers navigate life and make the right decisions, Katie says. Plus, “taking a look into the life of a 6th grader made me understand and respect all of the things that have happened in my life so far and to realize others have not been as lucky,” she adds. And from an even broader perspective, “the program allows people from all different walks of life to come together for a common goal” – and that’s what makes for a strong community.
