When a crisis occurs, a woman– who lost her job, her spouse, or other essential supports—often needs additional support to help her overcome an immediate financial crisis and start on a path to regain financial stability.
United for Women was launched by United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s Women’s Leadership Council in Allegheny County to help get women in these circumstances immediate, tangible support to avoid more serious crisis such as homelessness or long-term poverty. This growing need among women who were experiencing first-time financial crisis was revealed based on research, including data from our 211 helpline.
As part of our comprehensive plan and smart investments to help financially struggling families thrive, United Way’s United for Women initiative provides thousands of women facing an unexpected crisis with short-term assistance so they can get back on their feet and avoid poverty and despair. United For Women also engages volunteers to help women regain their jobs, enter the workforce and stabilize their family situations.
In 2016, United for Women helped over 2,200 women avoid financial crisis, find or improve employment and avoid homelessness.
Whether you are a WLC member or just someone who cares, you can help by volunteering or providing funding that provides short term assistance, including temporary housing, job training services and more.
