Fred Rogers Good Neighbor Day Honorees
In the spirit of Fred Rogers, we recognize our corporate partners who have helped make our neighborhood a special place. We are honoring 13 corporations, an outstanding individual community volunteer and an agency volunteer for their commitment to volunteerism and serving our most vulnerable neighbors.
EATON
Eaton’s employees are dedicated mentors for United Way’s Be A Middle School Mentor program, and volunteers for our Free Tax Prep initiative to help low income families avoid the high cost of tax preparation.
NOVA CHEMICALS
NOVA employees volunteer through United Way’s Open Your Heart to a Senior initiative, helping seniors stay healthy and safe in their homes.
BILL ISLER
Bill Isler is recognized for his lifetime of commitment to volunteerism and dedication to leadership and community service. After almost 30 years, Bill Isler retired as CEO of Fred Rogers company. He continues to be an advocate for children and families in need by serving on a variety of boards throughout our region.
COVESTRO
Through their Adopt-A-School partnership with Sto-Rox Elementary School, service to Veterans and support of early childhood literacy through the 100,000 Books Campaign, Covestro is impacting our neighbors in need. During the holidays, a Covestro team donned holiday sweaters and Santa hats and read to over 100 children from kindergarten to grade 3. Each child received a colorful literacy kit to take home.
DELOITTE
Deloitte is having a tremendous impact on our neighbors in need. Their employees are engaged in community volunteer opportunities through an ever-growing Day of Caring, as mentors with United Way’s Be A Middle School Mentor program and as leaders of “Give BAAC Day,” a unique opportunity for high school students to visit Deloitte offices for career exploration workshops.
DUQUESNE LIGHT & IBEW LOCAL 29
Duquesne Light Company, DQE Communications and IBEW Local 29 have a unique partnership that positively impacts the community. For the past six years, the partnership has extended to hosting the annual Lineman’s Rodeo and Safety Expo. The employee event features a range of family-friendly festivities including the highlight of the event—Duquesne Light’s linemen safely demonstrating their skills in various competitions. In 2016, the Rodeo raised nearly $20,000 in proceeds, which was matched dollar-for-dollar by the Company, with almost $40,000 ultimately being donated to United Way’s Impact Fund.
KEYBANK
KeyBank generously supports United Way’s Be A Middle School Mentor program, and many of their employees serve as mentors. Because of their support, nearly 350 middle school children to be matched with caring mentors this year.
UPMC
We recognize UPMC for their employees’ engagement in United Way’s Free Tax Preparation initiative, as well as their involvement in the United for Caregivers@work Pilot Program that provides education and support to support caregivers in the workplace.
FEDEX GROUND
FedEx Ground is being recognized for their employee engagement in the United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council, growing Next Generation participation and employee commitment to leadership service on various committees. FedEx employees also participate in year-round volunteer opportunities. Their involvement has a tremendous impact on our neighbors in need. We are particularly grateful to Henry Maier and his leadership as a co-chair of the Good Neighbor Center Committee.
GATEWAY HEALTH PLAN
Through continued large-scale employee engagement in several projects throughout the year, including United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council Sew-In, Gateway Health Plan is making a difference for our neighbors in need. Gateway allows employees to receive paid time off throughout the year to volunteer on their own. As a result, Gateway Health Plan employees are often the first to sign up for many of our United Way volunteer opportunities.
HARBISON WALKER INTERNATIONAL
Harbison Walker is known around the country for its strong support of United Way. Here in Pittsburgh, their service to our neighbors in need through employee volunteerism and the company-wide Day of Action, is changing lives in our community!
KPMG
In 2016, KPMG and United Way partnered to develop United Way’s 100,000 Books Campaign to promote the importance of early literacy. During the next three years, KPMG is leading the effort to put 100,000 books into the hands of children from kindergarten to third grade. KPMG, under the leadership of Bob Krizner, recognizes that children who can read at grade level by grade three are more likely to graduate from high school.
PPG
PPG’s Day of Caring, year round engagement of young professionals and Colorful Communities Projects brightens up our neighborhoods. Last summer, The PPG Foundation supported 4 Colorful communities’ sites, transforming classroom and afterschool spaces into colorful areas for learning and creativity. PPG used the science of paint to design warm and inviting spaces, full of dignity.
GRANT THORNTON
Grant Thornton had an incredible employee volunteer turnout at United Way’s 2016 Day of Action, where volunteers beautified Fowler Field, a local park and playground on the North Side. They also participated in our Build-A-Bike event, working with local children to build their very own bikes.

Barbara Mullen, a volunteer with Veterans Leadership Program, is recognized for her outstanding volunteerism.
